Essential Questions: Sister Nau-T
|
|
I have had about three lives so far while in this incarnation. In one of those lives, I was a part of the beginning of a community that is now referred to as The Family or the LA Family. One of the many powerful members of the LA Family is a drummer, cultural animator, martial artist, and change agent, we call Sister Nau-T.
I've had the pleasure of sharing ritual space with her, practicing Tai Chi and Yoga, and just hanging out chillin.
We present to you Sister Nau-T answering Essential Questions and sharing wisdom.

Essential Questions: Alexyss Tylor
|
|
Like many other folks, one day I received an email from a friend with the subject heading, "Have you seen this sister before?" The message of the email read, "If not, you HAVE to check her out. She is hilarious." That was my introduction to Ms. Alexyss Tylor. YouTube video clips of her former public access TV show in the Atlanta area have been forwarded far and wide. Darius, one of my kink sons, nearly drove us into a ditch because he was listening to an audio version of those video clips and was laughing uncontrollably while driving me to the airport in Atlanta.
Sister Alexyss Tylor has met with controversy and intense criticism for her style of delivery as well as her message. What is her message? Well, the term, Vagina Power adorns her web site. Her style of delivery is part blues singer, part preacher, part tipsy aunt at the bar-b-que, part diva, and part stone cold mama Black Power revolutionary. As we say in Hip Hop, she spits fire. A lot of people have been warmed by her words while others have gotten heated, and even burnt. She speaks passionately and plainly about the taboo topic of Black sexuality.
It is with great enthusiasm and pleasure that we bring you this installment of Essential Questions with Alexyss Tylor. To those who feel that we are legitimizing Ms. Tylor by giving her a forum, we say that she needs no legitimization from Blackfunk.org. The concept of legitimization is rooted in the same European supremacist, patriarchal hegemonic worldview that makes it necessary for those of us who have taken up the struggle for sexual liberation and erotic empowerment to exist.
So without further ado, Alexyss Tylor responding to Essential Questions:

Essential Questions: Ignacio Rivera
|
|
Essential Questions was a very popular part of the old Black Funk Yahoo Group. They were questions that I created and presented to the group for response and discussion. Some of the most important, provocative, and insightful conversations on the web regarding culture, sexuality, and spirituality happened as a result of the Essential Questions. Now that we have migrated to our own web site, here at blackfunk.org, I wanted to bring back some of that energy. The Essential Questions section at blackfunk.org will be a collection of interviews with funky, exciting people.
First in the series is Ignacio Rivera. Ignacio is definitely funky and hot. I've known Ignacio for several years now. Check out the interview and read Ignacio's response to the question, "What is social justice":

Essential Questions: Sex Education: Learning the Hard Way
|
|
Peace Everyone,
Here is Essential Question #1: What 5 important lessons about sex and sexuality have you learned through experience?
Share with us the stories of how learned those lessons.
I was introduced to the "Essential Questions" concept when I became a teacher in a Coalition of Essential Schools member school. Essential Questions are designed to require more than a yes or no answer. They call us to think consciously and deeply about the obvious and the not so obvious.
Peace Pleasure and Passion,
Herukhuti, M.Ed., M.A.
